International Travel and Export Controls

If you are planning on traveling to another country as part of your work for ISU, please fill out the International Travel Notification. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will receive this notification and review the information you have provided to assist in determining if a license may be required for your travel.

Prior to traveling outside the U.S. consider the following:

Background

Export Control Laws and Regulations promulgated by various Federal agencies, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of State, and the Treasury Department, govern items and information that can be transferred or taken out of the United States.

Traveling with Export-Controlled items, information, technology, software, or related materials may require specific licenses or approvals, unless an Export Control exception applies. In most situations, a traveler would not need to obtain a license to take items abroad.

Before you travel, you should ensure that the following things are not Export-Controlled:

  • Information that you may discuss while abroad, or
  • Items that you will take with you

If the items or information are Export-Controlled, you are expected to work with the University Export Control Officer to ensure that proper licenses and/or approvals are in place. Additional information regarding applicable University travel requirements and travel reimbursements is available at the Comptroller's website.

Applicability

These procedures apply to any University member who is planning to travel internationally either for:

  • University business; or
  • Personal reasons but are taking University information, equipment, devices, software, or technical data on the trip.
